Microsoft ASP - What is it?
Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP) is the way for programmers to link and build web applications. An ASP is a Web page that contains HTML and embedded programming code.
Here is an explanation of how the term Active Server Pages came to be, according to an article called "Introduction to Active Server Pages" by Buz Warmkessel:
ASP was "born" in November 1996 when Microsoft announced its design of an Active Platform. The Active Platform reflects Microsoft's ideas about how a desktop computer and a server computer should communicate. It consists of two parts: the Active Desktop and the Active Server. The Active Desktop refers to the client side, or the user's side, where HTML files are displayed on a web browser. The Active Server refers to the server-side component. This consists of pages that can be interpreted by the server, hence the term Active Server Pages.
ASPs are Microsoft's alternative to CGI scripts and Java Server Pages (JSPs),
which allow Web pages to interact with databases and other programs.
It was introduced with Version 3.0 of Microsoft's Internet Information Server (IIS).
The scripts are embedded in HTML forms and are written in any language, such as VBScript,
JScript, or PerlScript, allowing for versatility for development. By using a scripting language, ASP pages are fast and can produce individualized HTML output that is sent to the client. ASP scripts cannot be seen by the client because it is executed on the server side. The use of ASP allows the pages to be dynamic, which means the page can be completely customizable for the user. With Active Server Pages date, time, and other information can be displayed in different ways.
